COST-IC0601: Sonic Interaction Design (SID)

Minutes of the Meeting of WG3 "Interactive Art and Music"

February 3rd-4th 2009, Paris, France.

1. Attendance List

Daniel Arfib (French delegate), Alain Crévoisier (Swiss delegate), Jean-Julien Filatriau (Belgian delegate), Loïc Kessous (French delegate), Trond Lossius (Norwegian delegate)

2. Approval of the last meeting minutes (Jyväskylä, September 2008)

The minutes of the last WG3 meeting (Jyväskylä, September 2008) have been approved by the attendees.

3. Discussion on the final SID event

One of the main objective of this meeting was to talk about the final SID event and prepare a series of suggestions that will be exposed to the MC members during the next MC meeting in York (April 3rd, 2009). At the end of the discussion, three main possibilities emerged:

  • 1° The first possibility is to apply for a project funded by the Culture 2007 EU program. This kind of projects (“Cooperation measures) must involve at least three cultural operators from at least three different countries participating in the programme and they must last a maximum of two years. EU support for the actions is limited to half of the total eligible cost and is set between Euro 50 000 and Euro 200 000. Next call for application for this kind of project is september 2009, for a project that could start in Spring 2010. Among the WG3 members attending the meeting, no one was willing to lead the writing of such a project, which seems too heavy. But we will yet present this option to the MC.
  • 2° The second option would be to couple the final SID event with the NIME’11 conference, which should be hosted by University of Oslo in June 2011. The final decision of hosting should be officialised before June ’09. Trond will be in closed contact with the NIME’11 organizing committee and could lead the organisation of the SID event in this frame. The actual content of the event has still to be defined formally (what kind of art works, which curator etc...). This option could allow to disseminate the results of the SID action to the NIME community and sounded the most relevant for the attendees of the meeting.
  • 3° The last option was to organize an smalller which would involve the SID members (“anyone interested would bring things in his suitcase), as it was done for the final ConGAS event. This option is easily feasible and does not need a lot of preparation but is less ambitious than the previous ones, that’s why we would rather go to the NIME’11 option.

Others notes regarding the SID final event: - A famous curator is needed - It would be interesting to follow and document the process of creation of the selected art works

4. Possibility to write a proposal for a FET project

Following Daniel’s idea, we discussed about the opportunity of building a consortium to submit a proposal for a Future Emergent Technology project (FET), funded by EU. There are two types of call for such projects: proactive calls (open) and focused calls. One topic of the next call for application (september 2009) deals with ‘Human Computer Confluence”, but concerns only IP project, which are bigger that STREP project. Daniel suggested to rather go for a STREP, and highlighted two possible research thematics:

  • sonic sketching: how to describe sounds, using words, but also by mimicking, drawing... ? How to use these descriptions to retrieve the sounds ?
  • Internet of things (web 2.0): objects have a visual appearance (identity) but also a sonic one. What is the sonic purpose of an object ?

Daniel is willing to start the writing of the first version of such a project and circulate it to us and Davide (before York meeting).

5. WG3 wiki and template for examples annotation

We spent some time browsing the WG3 wiki, where a lot of information are still missing. Daniel suggested to refine the structure of the examples section, with one home page mentioning a list of examples with a link on a new page describing the example in detail, following a common template. Trond suggested a first draft for this template, with the following structure:
